Practical first steps of digital preservation outlined by Helen K. Bailey at MIT. Once images are sent out from our facility on hard drives, hither and yon, our staff often wonder about preservation steps being taken on these data. We know of some instances where the images have sat unloaded on the same hard drives for a year or longer without any back-up effort let alone diving into something like LOCKSS. Rather than “lots of copies…”, how about starting with just a couple on external hard drives dispersed in separate locations? We don’t want to have to do the work over for you (if this will even be possible).
