Why Are Institutions Converting to MARC21?

Prior to MARC21 standard cataloging format, many libraries around the world initially began cataloging books, files and records according to their own specifications. For a while, this was great because it allowed local patrons a mostly-tailored means of accessing the institution's data.

As time progressed, the institutions began to understand that, in order to incorporate other library's materials into their collection, they needed to revise their standards a little. The revisions became collaborative affairs where representatives from various institutions convened and discussed what standards they would use with the intent of granting better access to each of their respective collections.

Eventually, regional boundaries were crossed, agreements were entered upon and more refined cataloging rules enabled uniform standards across state and country lines. The United States, Canada and other countries began cataloging their records using a standard which was termed MARC21. Similarly, Great Britain and several other European countries reached an agreement to pool their resources together to have a standard wherein each member could be a contributing partner.

Having uniform standards with the region boded well from a financial standpoint as well since very similar cataloging techniques required less staff training. Cataloging rules could be shared amongst colleagues, which effectively shared the cost of maintaining their own collections.

As we continue our journey into the 21st century, libraries and institutions far and wide are beginning to realize the pressing need for a global standard for their catalogued records. Institutions see the need to convert their collections of different formats (UKMARC, MARCLIF, etc.) into one because their systems no longer support formats other than MARC21.

Converting to MARC21 need not be a daunting prospect, however. Backstage Library Works continues to work with institutions that have already embarked on this endeavor, communicating with them every step of the way. Most customers have worked with their particular format for a long period of time and rightfully expect the same attention to detail in their conversion requests. Backstage is eager to assist all institutions that see the need to convert their collections to MARC21 format.

Backstage Library Works understands MARC21 completely and is able to draw upon years of applied knowledge, taking the time and care to convert your collection according to any specifications you give. Converting to MARC21 allows your institution an unbelievable amount of access to other catalogued collections. It also helps your staff become acclimated to one standard rather than try to juggle different ones based on location. In the end, your patrons will notice the difference.
