Backstage webinar reveals important RDA adoption and enrichment statistics

PROVO, Utah, September 30, 2016 –– Over 100 metadata librarians participated in a recent webinar, RDA in Practice: Enrichment Profile Statistics Revisited, hosted by Backstage Library Works (www.bslw.com). An average of 70 professionals, representing academic, public and special libraries, responded to live polls during the event, contributing to a lively discussion on how their cataloging practices have evolved with the adoption of RDA.

Since March 2013, more than 100 libraries have signed up for RDA services from Backstage, resulting in the enrichment of more than 115 million records. In the webinar, Nate Cothran, vice president of automation services for Backstage, presented up-to-the-minute statistics of the enrichment choices made by libraries using Backstage RDA services.

Backstage provides libraries with a comprehensive online profile for RDA enrichment, offering 86 processing options and 92 sub-selections within those options. A full planning guide and corresponding online wiki explain those choices in detail. Librarians can access these resources at:

Attendee polls from the Backstage webinar on September 28, 2016, reveal the following:

  • 64% stated that their libraries’ catalogs currently contain more AACR2 records than RDA enriched records
  • 82% of libraries are retaining GMDs as-is (245 $h)
  • 80% of libraries are accepting CMCs in their catalogs
  • 73% of libraries are describing new records in RDA as much as possible
  • 58% are more inclined to make RDA changes to access points than to descriptive elements

Reflecting on library trends, Nate Cothran states:

“As an authority vendor, I find it very interesting to gauge the direction our clients and the library community as a whole are trending towards. Yesterday’s reluctance about enriching records with RDA elements has turned into today’s policy of making those changes almost whenever possible.

“RDA helps us walk along a linked data path and could perhaps be seen as the interim step necessary to get us there.”
